Our Annual Rundown of Gaming's Elite

Welcome to the first “Best of Gaming” of the new millennium! This is the 5th Anniversary of Casino Player’s annual readers poll, and to celebrate, we’ve added some new categories and gaming jurisdictions. In addition to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Tunica, Native American casinos and riverboats, the thousands of voters who responded to this year’s survey have picked their favorites in Reno, Laughlin, Lake Tahoe, and along Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.

We’ve also added some fun new categories. Look for the “Best Individual Shop” in “The Hotel Side” section. In “The Casino Side,” we’ve included “Best Vegas Locals Casino” and “Best High-Limit Slots.” And in “Dining,” readers voted their favorite Japanese restaurant, as well as the spots with the “Best Wine List,” the “Best Martini,” and the “Best Shrimp Cocktail.” Finally, in “All Those Extras,” you’ll find out which casinos have the “Best Theme” and the “Best Special Events.”

You’ll notice that we’ve included first, second, and third place winners from all the jurisdictions wherever possible. However, in some cases, either a particular category didn’t apply to a jurisdiction, or first place was such a run-away victory that we (in the former case) eliminated the jurisdiction from the category, or (in the latter) listed only the top vote-getter. Otherwise, we think you’ll find that this year’s “Best of Gaming” is the most comprehensive to date.

You’ll also find some pleasant surprises along with the perennial favorites. While Harrah’s has once again made a tremendous showing across the board, some of the newcomers, such as Bellagio in Las Vegas and Beau Rivage on the Gulf Coast, are making their presence known in a very big way. One can only imagine how diverse next year’s survey results will be, once readers become more familiar with properties such as Mandalay Bay, Paris and the Venetian. And with companies merging at an incredible rate, will properties such as the Rio, Caesars and The Mirage hold on to their favorable ratings?

Ahh…but that’s for next year. For now, sit back and enjoy the “Best of Gaming” 2000!
