Chicagoland (continued)
Ten years after the first riverboat set sail in Illinois, Chicago's casinos have turned into one of the hottest markets in gaming. Here's what to expect in the months ahead

The Indiana Side
Horseshoe Casino, Hammond

The closest casino to Downtown Chicago, the Horseshoe Hammond is just 20 minutes from the Loop and 30 seconds off the Skyway, which has undoubtedly helped make it one of the most successful casino operations in the state. It’s also the best place to view Chicago’s glittering skyline, and get a sense of the population density that has helped make the Chicagoland gaming market one of the hottest today.

Horseshoe Hammond was, of course, previously Empress Hammond, until it was acquired by Horseshoe Gaming in 1999. The company has already sunk several million dollars into the property to bring it up to Horseshoe standards, including the introduction of brand-name restaurants Jack Binion’s Steakhouse and the Village Square Buffet, as well as the Lake Michigan Deli Company. The riverboat offers 43,000 square feet of gaming space, with approximately 1,500 slots and 50 table games.

Meanwhile, the company is moving forward with plans to build a 300-room luxury tower and entertainment complex that will invariably give it an edge in this already competitive market. And check out the "Who Wants to be a Binionaire" progressive slot machines, starting at $150,000–the highest in the region.

Harrah’s Casino, East Chicago

Formerly the Showboat Casino, Harrah’s acquired this massive, Mardi Gras-themed riverboat as part of its acquisition of Showboat Corp., which also garnered it the Atlantic City Showboat and, for a time, the Las Vegas Showboat, which it subsequently sold.

Harrah’s East Chicago is an absolutely enormous riverboat casino, with four huge playing levels offering more than 1,800 slots and 70 table games. And like its sister casino in Joliet, the property is expanding, with a $47 million hotel tower expected to open by the winter. The hotel will consist of 15 floors and will have 293 rooms, including seven super suites on the top floor. Each suite will have a special theme, as well as butler and concierge service. The tower itself will be located adjacent to the pavilion area and will connect directly to the existing structure.

One thing Harrah’s kept from the Showboat days is the dazzling French Quarter Room, one of the finest restaurants in the region, featuring a gourmet menu reminiscent of the classic New Orleans restaurants. Like Van Buren’s at the Joliet property, make reservations as far in advance as possible. The East Chicago property also features a Fresh Market Square Buffet, the Winning Streaks Bar & Grill, Club Cappuccino, and the High Voltage Grill, located on the riverboat itself.

Shooting craps at Majestic Star

Majestic Star Casino & Trump Casino Hotel, Buffington Harbor, Gary

The combined forces of the Majestic Star and Trump riverboat casinos have helped make Buffington Harbor, in Gary, one of the more popular casino destinations. While each of the riverboats is unique in its own right, creating a partnership based out of a single land-based pavilion was an inspired idea. With Majestic Star cruising on the even hours and Trump cruising the odd hours, guests never have to wait longer than 30 minutes before boarding one of the two boats. Miss your boarding at one of the other casinos and be prepared to wait a couple of hours until the next cruise comes round.

The Majestic Star offers an elegant, three-deck casino with plenty of space, housing some 1,500 slot machines and 50 table games. The Trump riverboat is slightly smaller, offering 1,400 slot machines and 50 table games. Trump also features the unique Crystal Room on the fourth floor of the riverboat, which houses special events and player parties. The casino recently installed several banks of $.02 machines, allowing guests to really stick their two cents in!

The shared pavilion offers guests a variety of amenities, including live entertainment on weekend nights, the Skyline Buffet overlooking Lake Michigan, the Harbor Steakhouse for fine dining, plus several smaller eateries, including Jackpot Java, Miller Pizza, Shou Ki Noodle Sushi Bar, and Harbor Treats.
