Just tell me what you want

Sitting here at my desk, venturing out only when business requires, I tend to forget the forest even while I'm carefully studying the trees. Magazine publishing is like that. You dedicate all your waking hours to making sure the next issue is as perfect as possible, always working up to the last frantic second (and inevitably begging the printer for more time), and then you let it go. In publishing jargon, it's called "putting the issue to bed." Then, after it's been printed, you look it over, pray there are no errors, and move on to the next one.

Every issue of Casino Player is like one of those proverbial trees. It's the forest I have trouble with--stepping back from my desk and studying the big picture, trying to see the magazine in the same light as the reader does.

And that's why I need to hear from you.

You see, there are a number of things we consider when we plan out each issue. For example, gaming strategies are a must. I have always believed that our most important goal is to help gamblers become smarter players--even if your gambling budget is limited, or if you couldn't get a comp if your life depended on it.

A second goal is to help you choose not just how, but where to spend your entertainment dollars--where to find the best deals, the best restaurants, the best odds, the best shows--in short, the best of everything.

You'll also find articles on gaming destinations you may not have visited, such as Laughlin or the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We can't cover every jurisdiction, but we try to hit the main ones--and when you get there, we'll help you figure out how to best spend your time, both on and off the casino floor.

Those three paragraphs really sum up Casino Player's primary goals. But from there, I start losing the forest. And that's where you come in. For example: Do you want more basic strategies for table games, or do you want to read about advanced techniques the professionals use? Or maybe you want to read more about slots and video poker? Perhaps you'd prefer more stories about slot clubs or getting comps? Maybe you'd like to read about casino restaurants, and the chefs that make them special? We can do that too.

The point is, this isn't my magazine--it's yours. And if you're not getting what you want, you gotta tell me. By fax, by mail or by e-mail. Just tell me what you want.

Of course, all this opens a new can of worms. There are always conflicts in what people want. And it can be tough to sort through them.

"Enough with Atlantic City, we only go to Vegas."

"Forget Las Vegas, my friends and I only go to Atlantic City."

"Why don't you write about the casinos in Wisconsin? I never get to Las Vegas or Atlantic City."

Or: Too much blackjack; more entertainment; more slots; I don't care about Tom Jones; you never write about Tom Jones; not enough blackjackÉ and my all time favorite: Why should I subscribe, Donald Trump owns you!

Well, I assure you that while many of those comments may be tough to respond to, Donald Trump has absolutely no ownership in this magazine.

So drop me a line (my addresses are in that little box on this page). Tell me what you want to read about. And I promise, I'll do my best to incorporate your suggestions into my monthly editorial plans.
