Circus Circus' castle-themed resort on the Las Vegas Strip is officially named "Excalibur," the winning entry in a $25,000 "Name the Castle" contest. The winner is Jack D. Houston of Knoxville, Tenn., whose name is drawn from 268 identical entries. Construction begins the following week.

Steeplechase Pier, one of the last remaining amusement piers in Atlantic City, is destroyed by fire. Owned by Resorts International, the pier was used as a heliport for Trump Air helicopters.

The first $500 machine in the casino industry debuts at Caesars Palace. It accepts only one token per pull÷a coin made of a solid 10-karat gold outer ring, encircling a .999 silver center, and measuring 1.5 inches in diameter. The top jackpot on the slot is $250,000.
