Gaming Site Spotlight

Casino Fortune
www.casinofortune.com

With over $52 million in payouts, Casino Fortune is obviously one of the net's oldest and most popular Internet gaming sites—but there are specific reasons why they've been so successful. For one, they have the credibility market cornered, as the site is owned by the Sunny Group, a company that, among other things, has owned and managed five land-based casinos in the Caribbean and South Africa since 1984. Casino Fortune was also one of the charter members of the Interactive Gaming Council, the industry's self-regulating oversight body.

Another market Casino Fortune has cornered is the promotional one. From offering new players $25 in free credits to frequent contests with great vacations (to places such as Las Vegas and the Caribbean) as prizes, Casino Fortune spares no expense in their never-ending quest to offer their players the net's best perks.

Of course, all your favorite casino games are here, as well as a full sports book. A software download is required, but technical support and general customer service is strong.

What's Cool
Two Minute Warning

Two Minute WarningThere are literally hundreds of Web Sites on the net devoted to football handicapping. Some are powered by those obnoxious "tout" services, some are run by everyday folks posing as experts, and some are actually backed by legitimate sources and sports services. But most of these sites have a common thread: They charge outlandish fees for their information. For example, we found one site that charged $800 for a month's subscription to their handicapping newsletter. This is the same information, mind you, the average wiseguy standing on any street corner in any big city in the northeast could probably dictate in his sleep. But if you don't want to take out a small loan to get the skinny on the upcoming NFL match-ups, we found a free site for you: TwoMinuteWarning.com.

The trends, number crunching, schedule analysis and game previews are all here, and all for free. Focusing exclusively on the NFL, this site is obviously run by people who are not out to make a quick buck, but are truly handicapping enthusiasts. There's still time on the clock, so check it out now at www.twominutewarning.com.

Visiting Vegas?

Visiting VegasFor those travelers planning to visit Vegas, there's a new site designed to help with hotel accommodations, as well as show, dining, and recreation reservations. It's called visitingvegas.com. According to CEO Greg Saunders, visitingvegas.com will bring the entire city of Las Vegas together on one comprehensive site.

"On our website, booking hotel accommodations is just the beginning. You can explore, research, and set up airfare, tee-times, restaurant reservations and show tickets right from your living room. It's one-stop shopping with endless possibilities of creating your own personal travel package," boasts Saunders.

An interesting feature to the site is its "value" calendar, where room rates are posted 90 days in advance and updated daily. This will allow users to surf for the best possible room rates. Visitingvegas.com plans to work closely with the hotels themselves, which will use the site to fill sparse room occupancy dates. The site is designed as almost a slide-show presentation, ensuring quick and easy reading as each page is set in the exact format as the next.

Cyber News
Kyl Will be Back

As expected, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act of 1998 died in the House with Congress' adjournment in October and will have to be reintroduced in 1999. But as the 106th Congress opens in early '99, the man who put online gaming on the map—Arizona Senator John Kyl—is expected to come out with his guns blazing in his effort to ban the use of computers for placing bets.

What needs to happen, according to DC-based lobbyist Geoff Bacino of Bacino and Associates, is the online gaming industry must find a member of Congress to champion the regulation, rather than the prohibition, of the industry. Without a champion, the industry will continually have to depend on the good will of other groups (such as the horse racing industry and Indian tribes) if they hope to fend off Kyl and his anti-online gaming cohorts.

Online Winners Grabbing Headlines

RiverBelle Online CasinoOver the last few months, you've probably read about online gaming in your local newspaper, or perhaps even your favorite national news magazine. But it's unlikely that you've read any positive news about the online gaming industry. That is, until now.

It started in late October, when news spread of a Texas school teacher who won $82,789 on the River Belle online casino (www.riverbelle.com) while playing "Cash Splash," a progressive online slot jackpot administered by MicroGaming Systems. What was most encouraging about this story was the fact that the school teacher lost her Internet connection before she realized she

had won the jackpot. And, in what might be considered a surprising move by Internet gambling skeptics, she was promptly contacted by the casino by phone to inform her that she had won. MicroGaming even flew the school teacher to an Internet Gaming conference being held in New Orleans to present her with the check.

Then, in early November, a press release from Worldwide Media Holdings, Ltd came across the wire detailing the winnings of a Canadian resident who claimed $18,000 in jackpots playing at Casino Australia (www.casinoaustrailia.com) over a period of three days.

Newsgroup Noise

"Internet casinos have to go through a lot of local government licensing, plus pay for ads on the Internet and such. There's so much competition out there and it takes time for them to build a name. It doesn't seem to me they'd risk all that by screwing someone over."

"Wow. I know it's been discussed already but I can't help myself. I returned this morning from four days in Las Vegas and I finally got to check out the fountains at Bellagio. Wow. Pretty amazing."

Encryption

Utilizing software that employs complex mathematical formulas, encryption renders confidential information, usually of a financial nature, indecipherable to a hacker. This technology is especially important for online gaming sites, as encryption insures that a user's financial information and gaming results are not tampered with.
